What is Orbital Trauma?
Orbital trauma refers to injuries affecting the eye socket (orbit), which houses the eyeball, muscles, nerves, and surrounding structures. These injuries can result from accidents, sports-related impacts, violence, or falls. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications like vision loss or facial deformities.
Common Causes of Orbital Trauma
- Blunt force trauma (e.g., car accidents, sports injuries, physical assaults)
- Penetrating injuries (e.g., sharp objects, projectiles)
- Fractures (e.g., orbital floor fracture, blowout fracture)
- Facial trauma (e.g., falls, industrial accidents)
Symptoms of Orbital Trauma
- Pain and swelling around the eye
- Bruising (periorbital ecchymosis)
- Double vision (diplopia) due to muscle entrapment
- Numbness in the cheek, forehead, or upper lip (nerve damage)
- Sunken or bulging eye (enophthalmos/exophthalmos)
- Difficulty moving the eye (restricted gaze)
- Blood in the eye (hyphema)
Diagnosis of Orbital Trauma
- A thorough evaluation is necessary to assess the extent of injury:
- Physical examination (checking eye movement, vision, and facial symmetry)
- Imaging tests (CT scan, MRI, or X-ray to detect fractures or soft tissue damage)
- Ophthalmologic assessment (to rule out retinal detachment or optic nerve injury)
Pterygium Removal: Treatment Options
Non-Surgical Treatments
- Ice packs to reduce swelling
- Pain relievers (NSAIDs)
- Antibiotics (if infection risk is present)
- Nasal decongestants (for sinus-related complications)
Surgical Treatments
- Orbital fracture repair (reconstructing the eye socket with implants)
- Muscle or nerve repair (if movement is restricted)
- Enophthalmos correction (restoring eye position)
Recovery and Prevention
- Follow-up visits to monitor healing
- Avoid strenuous activities until cleared by a doctor
- Wear protective eyewear during high-risk activities (sports, construction work)
