What Is Eyelid Eversion (Ectropion)
Eyelid eversion, also known as ectropion, is a condition where the lower eyelid turns outward, exposing the inner surface of the eyelid and the eye. This can lead to irritation, dryness, and increased risk of infection. Ectropion is most common in older adults due to age-related tissue weakening but can also result from other causes.
Symptoms of Ectropion
Common signs and symptoms include:
- Eye redness and irritation
- Excessive tearing (watery eyes)
- Sensitivity to light and wind
- Dryness and discomfort
- Burning or gritty sensation
Causes of Ectropion
- Entropion can develop due to several factors, such as:
- Aging – Weakening of eyelid muscles and tissues
- Scarring – From trauma, burns, or previous surgeries
- Congenital conditions – Rarely, some infants are born with entropion
- Eye infections or inflammation – Such as trachoma (a bacterial infection)
- Facial nerve palsy – Weakens eyelid muscle control
Treatment Options for Ectropion
Treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause:
Non-Surgical Treatments
- Artificial tears & lubricating ointments – To relieve dryness and irritation
- Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections – Temporarily relaxes the eyelid muscles
- Soft contact lenses – Protect the cornea from rubbing
Surgical Treatments
- Eyelid tightening (lateral tarsal strip procedure) – Repositions the eyelid
- Skin graft or muscle repositioning – For severe scarring or congenital cases
Preventing Complications
If left untreated, entropion can lead to:
- Corneal ulcers
- Chronic eye infections
- Vision impairment
- Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent long-term damage.
When to See a Doctor
Consult an ophthalmologist if you experience:
- Persistent eye irritation
- Increasing redness or pain
- Blurred vision
